Introduction
Creative intent is an essential starting point. Intentions prepare your mind for a purpose. It works wonders to focus your efforts, whether in sport or art endeavors.
To my mind, there are certain principles that imprint attitudes or beliefs that enhance your desire to produce your best creative works.
1. Give Yourself Permission
Creative people are just people. Yes, there are genius-level artists, musicians and writers, but creativity is open to anyone.
Permission is now granted. Go create to the best of your current abilities. Go learn through trial and error. Embrace the challenge and seek fulfillment.
Pease give yourself permission to go express your creative talents.
2. Perfection Is Not Essential
Perfection plays an anti-creative role. It resides in the mind and creates doubt. It fails to recognize that flaws and imperfections build personal character.
And personal character is what allows us to create on our own. It gathers up all your years lived and compresses the pain and pleasure into a creative lifeforce.
So, remember that perfection is really a waste of energy, it is not essential.
3. Open Your Sensibilities
Creativity thrives on personal perception. Your capacity to be aware and respond to your surroundings opens up an entire ecosystem of artistic expression.
On the flipside, stifling your senses numbs the creative soul. It empties the fuel that fires your imagination. It deadens your inner core and leads to mediocrity.
So open your sensibilities to keep the flame of creativity burning hot.
4. Meaning Over Marketing
Marketing is overwhelming, meaning is more careful. Creatives are just as susceptible to trends and money spinners as others. Creatives have to eat too.
The struggle to maintain meaning in your work is a constant. In reality, it is essential to take care of both your bank account and your expressive soul.
So try not to let marketing drive all of your creative efforts.
5. Instincts Are Influential
In a time when influencers are an outsized portion of the culture, do not forget to listen to your gut. Your instincts are internal signals to offset the external assault.
As a creative person, it’s vital to develop your instincts. If they are weak, find ways to bring them to the forefront. Let your inner self shine.
Instinctual decisions are powerful, they move the needle in the right direction.
6. Respect The Craft
Respecting the craft has a two-fold purpose. First, it means you recognize the creative works of others. And second, it helps to push your creativity to other levels.
Without respect, there is not much creative intent to give a damn.
Engaging in a craft is a lifetime pursuit to create meaningful work.
7. Embrace The Slog
Creativity is just a fanciful name for hard work. Passion is the catalyst that gets you going, but the slog is where you define your artistic self.
The crunch time between an idea and completion is the creative zone. It is where the magic appears in the form of day to day sweat equity.
Embrace the slog. Do the work. Create and be happy.
8. Always Be Adaptable
Remember to stay flexible, to remain fluid. Obstacles are always present. It’s to your advantage to adapt to changes by finding alternative solutions.
Adaptability allows you to avoid perfectionism. Creative efforts can also benefit from unexpected shocks to the process.
An adaptable mindset keeps your creative works on track.
9. Be Genuine, Be Unique
Creativity is a gift. It’s up to you to decide what to do with it. Whether you pursue pure business interests or focus exclusively on the art, try to be genuine.
Genuine efforts are the precursors to being authentic. Staying true to yourself is not only reflected in your work, it underscores the value too.
A genuine creative is a unique creative.
10. Dismiss Doubt, Fear Finishing
This is your mantra. Repeat it over and over until you believe it. Doubt just gets in the way. Your real enemy is finishing your creative ideas.
That’s the ultimate opponent to fear because it stops your success.
Do not get distracted by doubt, overcome the real danger.
